We all know the weather since mid-January has been less than ideal for outdoor sports in Alaska.

So in this week’s premier of KTVA 11′s new series, “Get Out,” I head indoors to work on a popular outdoor summer activity.

Up until about 10 years ago, any form of golfing in Alaska during the winter was pretty much a dream. That all changed with the Fox Hollow Golf Dome, formerly Tanglewood Golf Dome.

“That’s all we’ve got, is golfing indoors. Unless you want to play some hard-to-find balls,” said golfer Donald Kessler

Golfers in the Anchorage area can keep their game on par during our long winters, or brush up on their game for a trip down south.

General Manager Rob Nelson said the wild weather and the start of the PGA Tour season has led to an uptick in golfers recently.

“When golf starts showing up on TV an awful lot and they’re playing in sunny places, it starts to drive people. So yeah we’ve seen a lot more people here the past couple of weeks than in November, December,” Nelson said.

The main draw to the dome this time of year is, of course, the driving range. It’s the second largest indoor sports facility in Alaska.

For golfers wanting more of a feel of a true course, the facility also offers high definition PGA Tour simulators so you can virtually take on courses such as Pebble Beach. And yes, it is very close to real golf as the game did pick up my wonderful slice.

Donald Kessler caught the golf bug five years ago and is happy he has a place close to home to feed his addiction.

“It’s so challenging. You’re never, ever going to be the same every single day. Every game is going to be different,” he said. “You’re always working at it and you can play it until you’re 90.”
